ABOUT DR. KUTY

Dr. Maria Kuty Housecall Veterinarian. Santa Cruz, California and Kupenda cat Dr. Kuty and her beautiful Kupenda

I received my doctorate of veterinary medicine from UC Davis in 2000. I then returned to the Santa Cruz area, and have worked in small animal hospitals in Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey counties. I decided early in my career that I wanted to focus exclusively on the primary care of dogs and cats. My special interests include senior pet care, pain management, and feline medicine. While I greatly enjoyed the very dynamic atmosphere of small animal hospitals, I started providing care in the calmer and more focused environment of the home in 2011. In 2012, I completed the Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians Program in Colorado and became a certified Veterinary Medical Acupuncturist. I have assisted dogs and cats with various medical conditions from arthritis to kidney failure with this safe and effective method. I have also provided general care in the home, including annual examinations and vaccinations. In 2017 I started to focus more on senior pets and their needs. Pain management, mobility issues, and quality of life are common concerns I focus on. I am now transitioning my practice to end of life only. At this time, I am providing only euthanasia services, but hope to also include hospice care in the future.

Away from work, I have two beautiful felines to appreciate. When I am not home with them, I can often be found exploring the many trails of our beautiful area on my mountain bike. I also enjoy hiking, camping, and spending time with family and friends.

The Kitties

Pele Pele and her soccer ball

Pele arrived in the Kuty household in 2006. She was a stray kitten in need of a home, and I fell for her instantly. Pele earned her name by playing fetch with a soft soccer ball cat toy (okay, it is a dog toy, but please don't tell her that). She has refused to play fetch with anything else, even one of the identical soccer ball toys purchased to replace her now-ratty toy. She also set her tail on fire twice as a kitten, thus making her worthy of being named after the fire goddess Pele. Candles are no longer allowed in Pele's house.

India India as a kitten

India, aka Indy, was another stray kitty who arrived unexpectedly. Knowing I have a weakness for tuxedo cats, my coworkers brought her to me one day at work in the summer of 2007. I was again not expecting to adopt another cat, but I met her and it was too late. India immediately proved herself to be the sweetest cat, always wanting attention, and always eager to share her purr. She can be a crazed lunatic around toys, or perfectly happy resting when a lap is available. She enjoys napping in sunbeams, being with people whenever possible, and any kind of treat.

Hippy the retired cat Hippy in the sun

Hippy is the newest member of the household, although he is the oldest of the felines by about a decade. He arrived in 2009 having lived as an exclusively outdoor cat, was not comfortable with human contact, and had some medical issues. I have been so thrilled to watch him relax into a social and affectionate cat who has never wanted to leave my house. He spends most of his time in a heated cat bed, is very vocal in demanding treats, and seems to be very much enjoying his retirement.

Update November 2013. Hippy passed away on Thanksgiving. He was such an amazing little kitty, and taught me so much. I am very grateful for the time I had with him, and like every pet owner just wish we had had more time. I can not bear to remove his picture from this website, for he is still very much with me.
